John 12:20-21: there were some Greeks in town who had come up to worship at the Feast. They approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee: “Sir, we want to see Jesus. Can you help us?” (The Message Bible)

I’ve just begun a book by Diana Butler Bass entitled “Christianity After Religion: the end of the church and the birth of a new spiritual awakening.” Like I said, I’ve just begun the book so I don’t yet know the details of her argument, but the title seems to give a lot of it away. The above verses tell how some outsiders came to Jesus’ followers saying, “We want to see Jesus. Can you help us?” There are many people out there, including some of you who are reading this, who are drawn to spiritual things, who “want to see Jesus” but have not found those of us in the church either willing or able to help you. I’m sorry about that. There are also many people out there, including some of you who are reading this, who want the church to be a place where people find Jesus. Let’s work harder to that end. Maybe these two groups can come together and share spiritual realities in a physical place. You will no doubt be hearing more about the book in these emails over the coming weeks. Hey Diana, we want to see Jesus. Can you help us?
