Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.
On July 15th my wife and I celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary. Inside our wedding rings is inscribed the reference to the above verse. I guess we were young and idealistic back then and thought we were embarking on a grand adventure the end of which we could not foresee. Six moves, three children and one grandchild later we are less idealistic and have found that some of the unforeseen events were less than what we asked or imagined. But only some. In the wider sweep of things our life together has taken us places we would never have dreamed (never dreamed of living in New Jersey!), brought us in touch we so many wonderful people (you know who you are), and given us the opportunity to engage with others on the deepest levels of life and faith. It hasn’t been a walk in the park all the time but it has been some of the time and through all the changes that seed of hope that was represented by the engraving in our rings has continued to grow. I’ve still got stuff to deal with, bumps and bruises both physical and spiritual. I moan and fuss a lot more than I should. But I have found “his power that is at work within us” and I still believe the future holds “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” So here’s to the ups and downs that ache and inspire, give perspective and sometimes take it back, break your heart in ways too glorious for words. Now to him….
