Luke 3:16 But John intervened: “I’m baptizing you here in the river. The main character in this drama, to whom I’m a mere stagehand, will ignite the kingdom life, a fire, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out. (The Message Bible)

I spent part of early Sunday evening switching back and forth with the TV remote between the AFC football championship game and the E Entertainment red carpet coverage of the Golden Globe awards. And wondering who I was. There is an old saying in the theater world to the effect that there are no small parts only small actors. Whether it is sports or theater or life in general there is a dignity in playing one’s part with dedication and commitment, for the joy of the greater good- the team or the project. John understood this in relation to Jesus. In life’s holy drama there are no small roles, only a great God, great love, great salvation. John was happy to be a supporting actor. What about us? Gotta run- Jennifer Lawrence just won for best actress in a movie. Did you see that dress!
