Luke 4:22 All who were there, watching and listening, were surprised at how well he spoke. But they also said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son, the one we’ve known since he was a youngster?” (The Message Bible)
There is a problem for actors when they have had a successful TV series. The problem is that people will always see them as the character they played. Henry Winkler will always be the Fonz even when he is portraying a completely different role in a very different show. We tend to see what we expect to see and often have a difficult time looking beyond expectations. Apparently the people in Jesus’ hometown had this same problem with him. Maybe we do too. We think we know what Jesus or God or the bible is all about and don’t bring fresh eyes or open hearts to them anymore. When we prefer comfort to truth we miss a lot. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son, the one we’ve known since he was a youngster?” Maybe; but maybe not. It certainly may be worth a fresh look. How might you do that this week?
