Ecclesiastes 3:1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens
This is a beautiful piece of poetry and has been set to music by folk and rock singers, but more importantly it confronts us with one of life’s most profound questions: is there order and purpose to our lives and what we experience in them or is it all random events out of which we try to make the best? Some people say it is basically random but then live like there are indeed guiding principles that shape things, like love and justice. Some people are just the opposite. They say there is purpose and meaning to things, maybe even God, but live like they are on their own and have to be constantly on guard, ready for anything, because who knows what could happen. I guess this passage, the bible in general, and Christianity in particular tells us there is an order of things ordained by God and, while broken by sin and somewhat beyond our total comprehension as finite humans, we can trust the hand of God in our lives and our world. After the Christmas stuff is put away for another year, this is what remains- a God we can trust who acts in the history of the world and our personal histories. Can 2014 be a time and season of faith and trust in this God? How? What is the time and season into which God is leading you?
