Matthew 17:6- When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.
Do you like rollercoasters? When I was small I didn’t- too scary. As a teenager and young adult I did- thrilling. Now that I’m somewhat older I’m back to the too scary phase. What I find interesting is how close a connection there is between fear and thrill. In the passage above three of the disciples got to see Jesus with Moses and Elijah. Then they got to hear the voice of God. The result, says verse six, is that “they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.” Connecting with the glory of God can be scary and/or thrilling, whether that connection comes through God’s power in nature, the birth of a baby, the death of a loved one, or the truth of the scriptures touching our hearts. We can keep our faith at a safe and comfortable level but we won’t know much of the glory of God. When God breaks into our lives in the various ways he does it can be disorienting and even scary- but it also has the potential to be thrilling. Where will you find the glory of God this week? How will you respond to it?
