John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Have you ever thought about what you would wish for if a genie popped out of a lamp or a bottle or whatever and granted you three wishes? Come on…. Sure you have. And you can’t wish for more wishes (everyone knows that is the rule with genie wishes). If this isn’t the sort of thing that goes through your mind when you read the above verse you are a better person than me. But you know, as do I, that getting what we want out of God or Jesus or prayer is not what this verse is about. It’s about abiding (remaining) in Christ. If our prayers come out of our life in and with and for Jesus we pray differently. I’m not going to tell you I understand this. What I will tell you is that we approach it all the time when we pray the Lord’s Prayer- that part about “thy kingdom come, thy will be done.” No wish fulfillment, just a mixing and molding of our wills with God’s. This week, how will you pray?
