Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

Who remembers the Spice Girls? Their big hit, at least the only one I remember, sang “Tell me what you want, what you really, really want!” Apparently what they really, really, really, really want is a “zigazig ha.” What?! That’s the way it was written when I googled the lyrics. Eve found the fruit desirable for gaining wisdom. Men and women find each other desirable. Alcoholics desire a drink. Parents desire things for their children. The thing that makes life life is desire. Love is desire. The greatest commandment, Mark 12:30, is the quote of Deuteronomy 6:5; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” According to the bible we were made to desire God. It is what life is fundamentally all about. All sorts of good and appropriate and healthy desires can flow from that base but nothing can take its place. Of course, this passage is about the way humanity has gone down the path of inappropriate desire. Our desires drive our lives. We were made to desire God. We choose to follow our desires for other things. Tell me what you want; what you really, really want. Better yet, this week, tell God what you want; what you really, really want.
