Matthew 18:12 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?”
Do you pick up a penny if you see it lying on the sidewalk? There was a time when corner stores had penny candy. You could actually get a piece of candy for a penny so, of course, you would pick it up. Now……? Twenty bucks you stop and pick up. I officiated at a wedding over the weekend that was outdoors at a beautifully picturesque site. Across the street were sheep! It was a gorgeous pastoral scene but I think the sheep were for show. I don’t think anyone’s livelihood depended on them. The sheep in Jesus’ day had value and this, of course, is Jesus’ story. This one lost sheep may have represented the profit margin of the owner. Each of those 99 sheep had value and it didn’t matter which got lost because they were all essential. How about you? Are you like the penny that is hardly worth the effort to bend over and pick up or are you an essential part of something bigger and valued as such? What about that guy over there or that woman over here? Point of the story is that Jesus says “valuable.” Who will you bend over and pick up this week?
