Mark 8:38 “If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

You may have heard that there was an election this past week. If you were eligible, I hope you voted and no, I don’t want to know for whom you voted. It was a hard choice for me this time as I saw major deficits with both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. I was also repulsed by the negative and demeaning tone of the campaign. Still on Tuesday I stood in the booth and had to make a decision. The time for philosophical speculation was over and it was time to ultimately decide who would get my vote. In life we choose. Elections are clear cut in this regard. Other aspects of life may be less so but require choosing none the less. It is easy and comfortable to view Jesus as a cultural icon and to theorize over his teaching or his role in history. But, as he makes clear in the verse above, we are to choose in the here and now if he is who we follow or an embarrassment. This week ask yourself, “am I ashamed of Jesus.”
