Isaiah 61:10 I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
There is an old saying that “the clothes make the man.” It might have been coined by the people who wanted to sell clothes but there is some truth to it. Whether it is a matching tie and pocket square or torn jeans with sneakers what people wear is often a statement about how they see themselves. I confess that when I watch the news and weather on TV I am often more captivated by the styles of the newscasters than I am the content of their reporting. The day when everyone put on their “Sunday best” to attend church is long past but many people still get a special outfit to wear on Christmas Eve. The picture the prophet paints above is one in which God beautifies the people with “garments of salvation” and “a robe of righteousness.” What we put on the outside of our bodies is less important than what God is doing in our spirits and communities and world and these are reasons to “delight greatly.” This week, what are you wearing for Christmas?
