John 1:45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
These two aren’t talked about very much in the Gospels but John chooses to give us a glimpse into their early encounter with Jesus. Like most things in the Bible and many things that we only know about through written documents this account lacks details that we might like to know. How Philip came to the above conclusion isn’t described but the conclusion he comes to is clear. Who is Jesus? A great teacher? A wise prophet? The commander of a rebellion? People have tried to make the case for each of these. Philip boils it down to “the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote.” According to Philip and/or John, Jesus is the focus and fulfilment of the story of God, the story of life. That’s a lot to put on a human being. How would define or describe Jesus? Could he be “The One?” If so, what does that mean to you?
