John 3:20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

When Adam and Eve get caught in the garden they hide. They slither into the shadows thinking they can shield themselves from the illuminating gaze of God. The verse above is just a continuation of that story. In fact, much of life is just a continuation of that story. It is unclear from the text if this is the author of the gospel of John or Jesus himself speaking. It doesn’t matter. We all know the statement is true simply based on our own lives. When we do wrong, as we all do, we hide in the haze of lies or silence or image or misdirection. Bars keep their lights low because, between that and alcohol, people will look more attractive than they do in full light. Their flaws muted. Light exposes. The light of Christ exposes the worst in us. The light of Christ reveals the grace of God. There is loss and love all at the same time. This week, how will you come into the light?
