Psalm 51:8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
There is another movie about Winnie-the-pooh coming out this week. There are lots of memorable characters in the hundred acre wood but one I remember often is the donkey, Eeyore. According to the Disney website, “Gloomy Eeyore is not a fan of much, other than eating thistles, but his loyalty wins the hearts of his friends every time he loses his tail.” Eeyore lives like he is carrying the weight of the world on his back and it is about to crush him. Psalm 51 is about the cry for mercy. Some of us carry crushing loads of guilt, sometimes unfounded and sometimes deserved. We seem to know that in the deepest parts of our being we are not what God would have us be let alone what others or even ourselves would expect and desire of us. For some, that experience can be devastating, like the crushing of bones. The psalmist wants out from under. Is that possible? The message of Christianity is that, despite our failure to be what we should, we are still loved by God and given a way out from under that guilt through trust in Jesus. Even Eeyore has the possibility of finding not only the strength to struggle onward but the God given gift of joy. This week, is there a weight of guilt in your life you need to lay before God?
