Psalm 130:5  I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.

So, what exactly is the “word of the Lord?” We often hear that the Bible is the word of God and there is a sense in which that is true. But when the prophets exclaimed that the word of the Lord came to them they didn’t mean that the Bible came to them. Or when in John 1 it says that the word became flesh it doesn’t mean that the Bible became human. So, what is this word which is the object of the psalmist’s hope? We have a saying in English that goes “I give you my word” meaning that I will do what I say I am going to do; I will keep my promises. The concept of the word of God is a complicated one but I think it has to do with a faithfulness that can be trusted; statements that are true and dependable. Those are the types of words you can build your hope around. Those are the type of words that are worth waiting on. This week, what do you hear as God’s word to you?
