Psalm 111:2 Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them
The above is from the NIV translation of the Bible. It’s the one we have in the pews at our church. The NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) renders it, “Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.” It’s the time of year when children are returning to school. They will study many things and hopefully ponder a few more. As a society we don’t teach in public schools the possibility that these things that kids study or ponder might be related to God. If they are going to make that connection it will be up to other adults to help them do so. This psalm ends with the idea that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Apparently fearing the Lord in the proper sense does not preclude delighting in God’s works. It is up to those who believe this is true to express it to the next generation through our actions, words, commitments, and prayers. This week, which works of the Lord will you ponder? Which will you delight in? How will you let it be seen by some younger person?
