Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
In the first chapter the writer emphasized that Jesus was in some way God: “heir of all things, through whom also God made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word” (1:2, 3). Now in chapter 4 the writer looks to the other side of the coin- that Jesus was at the same time 100% human, every bit like you and I in nature except for that little caveat about sin. It’s a tough one to wrap our minds around, but we are asked all the time to affirm things we can’t fully comprehend: The world began 8 billion years ago (what was before that?), everything is made of atoms and they are made of particles and quarks and whatever. There are things we recognize like love and justice without being able to pin them down with equation-like certainty. So, yes, Christianity asserts that Jesus was fully human and fully God. This week, how will your heart respond to a Jesus your mind can’t fully comprehend?
