John 4:10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water.” (The Message Bible)
This is from a well known Bible story about a Samaritan woman whom Jesus asks for a drink at a well. She is surprised that a Jewish man would ask this of a Samaritan woman. There were taboos against Jewish and Samaritan interaction as well as male/female discourse. The above is Jesus’ response to her. Living water was a way of referring to what we call running water from a stream or river, but Jesus was probably making a pun with the double meaning. The woman could see that there was no running water anywhere around. He goes on to say that his living water would well up to eternal life, thus speaking figuratively. But the point above is that the woman didn’t know who she was dealing with. If she had she would have asked for something big. What sort of living water might you ask of God if you really understood his generosity? And who does this Jesus think he is?
